STO is in closed beta at this time, but Cryptic has released two videos detailing ship combat.
“Word on the street” from “people in the beta” suggests that these videos are dead on representation of what you should expect to see while playing this game.
Here’s Part 1:

And here’s Part 2:

Could they rip Eve’s combat system off even more?

  • Ganelon says:

I never cared for Eve. I tried to like it, but it just felt like a major time-sink.

That being said, I never noticed anything about Eve using power management and directional shields as part of it’s tactical dynamics. It’s ship combat appeared to me to be superficial. If you outgun your opponent, you win(or they flee).

STO combat is very much like Star Fleet Battles (or the video game based off it Star Fleet Command). If they are ripping anything, it is that old system. Allocating power to certain subsystems, using the bridge officer’s abilities to increase power/shields, maneuverability. Sending boarding parties.

I never saw these things in Eve, but if they do have them… it’s a natch that it was Eve that “ripped” them from Earlier Star Trek combat games (both PnP and computer).

I agree there’s things in STO that are beyond Eve – as is natural as games progress. “Speccing” officers to lead yourself to strengths in different areas seem pretty cool. Outfitting your ship to make your support ship different from my support ship is nothing different from Eve … or any MMO for that matter. Even in the MMO Giant WoW World – gear makes a difference in how you want to play the game. Just the initial game video made me think, “Hey – it’s eve with white ships”

I hope Cryptic can redeem themselves for some of the failed launches of a game or two in the past.

Can I play a Klingon? I would buy this game faster than Heidi Fliess servicing a hollywood star …

  • Ganelon says:

Nam, Yes… you can play a Klingon. It’s an unlockable race, but it unlocks shortly after starting your Fed career.

I’m very disappointed in Cryptic’s handling of Champions Online. I cut them a bunch of slack, but when they introduced the Blood Moon event, they made changes to their rendering engine that has caused frame rate hitching every few seconds. Even if I turn all graphics settings to low….hitching. I’ve tried working with their support, but frankly… they are idiots.

So, I have trepidation about STO. Cryptic is not yet in the same light that I hold on SOE… but they are getting there.

  • Namoric says:

    Awesome.

    I can be a Klingon

    From Uranus.

(sorry – I had to go there.)
