More on the Child Rapist

by Ganelon — Categories: Geekery8 Comments

Bill Bennett shares his thoughts on Hollywood’s defense of a child rapist…

The Polanski Double Standard [Bill Bennett]

At a certain point, “shut up and sing,” or “shut up and act,” or “direct,” or “produce,” will not cut it. Before we are anything else, we are citizens and human beings. And no matter what our profession, we not only have to follow common bonds of decency but the common laws of civility, not to mention the civil and criminal laws too. That’s not a tall order.

Here’s the CNN squib:

Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar and Martin Scorsese have “demanded the immediate release” of fellow filmmaker Roman Polanski, who was arrested in Switzerland on a U.S. arrest warrant related to a 1977 childsex charge.

They were among 138 people in the film industry who signed a petition against the arrest.

Polanski was on the way to the Zurich Film Festival when Swiss police detained him in response to the American warrant.

The filmmaker pleaded guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor but fled before he could be sentenced. He settled in France, where he holds citizenship. Investigators in the United States say Polanski, then 43, drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl.

Let me repeat this last part: He drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl. And he plead guilty — but then fled the country.

One entertainer got it right, the singer Jewel. Here’s a Tweet she sent out yesterday: “Polanski admitted raping a 13 yr old-whys every1 in the arts upset hes facing jail? cause hes a gifted director? what am i missing?”

Let me say one last thing about this. Time passed is not the issue, and neither is accomplishment in the arts — justice and the message we send is precisely the issue. As Mark Steyn notes, what are we going to do, start an “Artists United for Pedophile Rapists” movement here?

When scandals turned up in the Catholic church, the elites — as everyone — were rightly shocked. It was a major, several year story. And the abuses investigated, detailed, and condemned went back to 1950, 27 years earlier than Polanski’s crime. Priests and parishes and archdioceses were punished and sued and even bankrupted. There is a major double standard here — not because that is what is wrong, but because what Polanski did was wrong and too many want to dismiss it and move on — because he’s in the favored class of the elite.

Are these artists and other Polanski defenders really saying a child can be drugged and raped, a 13-year-old child mind you, and the consequence is time, for simply time — never mind fleeing justice — will heal that?  This is a horrible message, and the artistic industry, so callous to claims about lyrics encouraging this kind of trashy behavior in the past, better get it right when the behavior is real and when the message they send is one that most people — rightly — abhor. You want to know why Michael Medved titled his book Hollywood v. America? It wasn’t because of this case, but it might just as well be now. Who defends child rape? Well, now you know who.

Cautious Optimism – September 29th, 2009

by Tholan — Categories: Cautious OptimismComments Off

When I was an intern in college, one of my supervisors commented to me that there are two types of jobs in the workforce: you get to paid to be somewhere or you get paid to do something.  So I have been working weird hours recently, and unlike my normal grind, these hours trend towards being paid to be somewhere.  This work has afforded me an opportunity to work on the web-show, but I haven’t spent much time working on Geekery.  What can I say?  Not enough hours in the day and my sleep schedule is really twisted.  Honestly, my brain has been so wrapped around politics that I didn’t want to even attempt to put digital pen to digital paper.  All I can muster is some trawling.

I have been looking for a new computer and a digital camera/recording set-up to use for the web-show.  I also would like a new rig for gaming.

Oh, just one more thing before I forget… Roman Polanski Raped A Child

by Ganelon — Categories: Geekery2 Comments

As Polanski Apologists cry for Justice, Kate Harding reminds us of the one undisputed fact of the case…

Roman Polanski Raped a Child.

Roman Polanski raped a child. Let’s just start right there, because that’s the detail that tends to get neglected when we start discussing whether it was fair for the bail-jumping director to be arrested at age 76, after 32 years in “exile” (which in this case means owning multiple homes in Europe, continuing to work as a director, marrying and fathering two children, even winning an Oscar, but never — poor baby — being able to return to the U.S.). Let’s keep in mind that Roman Polanski gave a 13-year-old girl a Quaalude and champagne, then raped her, before we start discussing whether the victim looked older than her 13 years, or that she now says she’d rather not see him prosecuted because she can’t stand the media attention. Before we discuss how awesome his movies are or what the now-deceased judge did wrong at his trial, let’s take a moment to recall that according to the victim’s grand jury testimony, Roman Polanski instructed her to get into a jacuzzi naked, refused to take her home when she begged to go, began kissing her even though she said no and asked him to stop; performed cunnilingus on her as she said no and asked him to stop; put his penis in her vagina as she said no and asked him to stop; asked if he could penetrate her anally, to which she replied, “No,” then went ahead and did it anyway, until he had an orgasm.

Beyond Silicone – The next step in semi-conductor evolution!

by MrElectro — Categories: Geekery, Quagmire's Den, TechnicalComments Off

It seems every time we come up on a limit, we find a way to beat it. We are fast approaching the limits of silicone, when it comes to using it for ever decreasing size and therefore increasing speeds in CPU’s.

Necessity breads innovation though. We are a resilient race. Give us an obstacle, and we will build a way around it.herbertsmithite

Of course, I am still waiting to hear what the research will determine with Herbertsmithite. That just fascinates me to no end. Will I get to see Quantum Computing in my lifetime? I certainly hope so!

FCC to Formalize Net Neutrality

by Ganelon — Categories: Geekery4 Comments

This is a very good thing….

Genachowski laid out two new principles for addition to the FCC’s previous four which were established in 2005 in relation to Internet legalities. The list currently says the following:

1. Consumers are entitled to access the lawful Internet content of their choice.

2. Consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement.

3. Consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network.

4. Consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.

5. Broadband providers cannot block or degrade lawful traffic over their networks, favor certain content or applications over others and cannot “disfavor an Internet service just because it competes with a similar service offered by that broadband provider.”

6.Broadband providers must be transparent about the service they are providing and how they are running their networks.

I expect there to be some legal challenges to this by the combined efforts of the telecoms… they will probably cry about the cost of expending the bandwidth to an ever “hungry” consumer market…but they are going to have to justify why Japan can offer 3 times the bandwidth I get with FIOS for less money per month. That fact is, with normal revenues they could double bandwidth on a yearly bases while still making money hand over fist.

Gantastic Geek Round-up 09/18/09!

by Ganelon — Categories: Geekery, Pax Ganelonia1 Comment

Champions…Champions…Champions…

Nothing can be said in this roundup unless it starts with Champions Online. I’ve been crazy playing this since it went live earlier this month. As much as I want to get out of the perma-newbie mold I had playing City of Heroes… I still find it addicting to create new characters.  Even so… I do have my old mainstay, Warcat. He’s been growing in levels and is trudging along.

One of my weaknesses in this style of game (MMORPG) is that I shun achievement, which these games are primarily geared toward. I goof. I wander. I pick meaningless fights. Leveling is a surprise when it happens. I read of my cohorts in Champions of Akalabeth, some of whom are zooming through levels toward this mythical beast called “End Game”.

The one thing that will keep me playing this is that it is well built to use the 360 controller. I’ve been having some shoulder stress that mouse use has aggravated, and the controller totally mitigates that issue. For an action/RPG hybrid that wants you to play for hours, this is a God Send!

Supernatural is back!

The Winchester Boys return for Season 5 of this really kick ass show.  The SheGan and I have been chomping at the bit for this since we finished the last episode of season 4. We got insanely hooked on the show and watched every episode one after the other over a two month period. Glad to have that back on our radar again.

A Basestar full of Naked Boomers

I recently got SheGan into Battlestar Galactica. To my surprise, she has dived straight into it. She’s never been about the Geekly Arts, so this is a delight. She’s even started to yell “Frak!!!” in good context. Delightful.

I Fear Bats. It’s time my enemy shares my dread.

I have…obtained… a copy of the Batman Arkham Asylum game for the PC. This is one of the best ports I’ve ever played. The graphics are stunning and very smooth, even on my subpar Pentium D processor. True, I have a good Video card… but even so… it plays as good as I see it being played on the console.

District 9

I got a chance to see District 9, and I concur with the direction of Tholan thoughtful review. However, I was put off by the over the top nature of the inhumanity. The movie is produced by Peter (let’s make a 9 hour movie about gay midgets walking) Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp, and there is an air of “Meet the Feebles” and “Dead Alive” in how the Aliens and Humans are portrayed. Unlike those two bad movie classics, this film is a serious film and a competently made social commentary on apartheid. I recommend it, but it was not a mind blowing experience for me. Could of been my mode going into it though.

District 9: A Tale of Inhuman Suffering

by Tholan — Categories: Geekery, Movie, ReviewComments Off

Neil Blomkamp’s debut feature film is a smashing success.
At a cost $30 Million to make, the film earned more on its first weekend ($37 Million) and to date has earned over $115 Million world-wide.  The movie stands as s testament to the quality of “undiscovered” talent that exists in the film industry and speaks directly to the reality that a “megastar” is not needed to tell or sell a feature film.

Blomkamp’s tale is a serious look at Apartheid and the plight of refugees as seen through the lens of cricket-men from outer space.  The “Prawns”, as the aliens are called, are a mirror of a majority modern human society.  The millions of aliens who come on the mother-ship are sickly, starving, malnourished lot; they are largely devoid of the intelligence that has them cast across the stars.  Humanity takes a stand for these visitors and provides them with food and shelter on the ground beneath their hovering ship.  This ground is a slum in Johannesburg known as District 9 (a most direct reference to the actual District 6 of Apartheid infamy).

What follows is a steady moving story that speaks to the problems of encampment and segregation; governmental mistakes, multi-national corporate greed, and the age old human fear of the unfamiliar.  It is masterfully put together and beautifully layered.  A more perfect and gritty sci-fi film has not been produced in years.  Does the story pull punches?  Yes.  Does this story have plausibility holes?  Certainly.  Does the story have pieces that don’t quite fit snug?  Absolutely.  But what sci-fi set in a “current day” scenario doesn’t?  If you can see past the flaws (and what geek can’t) you should find a thoughtful and introspective story that asks a serious question about man’s inhumanity to man.
